Canberra Holiday

From humble beginnings, Canberra, Australia's capital city, has become a thriving metropolis with plenty to do for singles, couples and families.

While Canberra is best known for its politics (it's not unusual to see prominent politicians behind you in line at the local coffee shop), it has also become famous for its diverse and multicultural lifestyle.

Things to see and do

There are a multitude of things to see and do in Canberra. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Australian Institute of Sport (AIS)

Ever wondered what it takes to become an elite athlete?

Located 10 minutes from Canberra's city centre, the AIS is open for public tours. Guided by an elite athlete, you can see the facilities, watch athletes train and gain a unique insight into nutrition and diet. The tour also includes Sportex, an interactive exhibit where you can compare how you measure up against Australia's elite athletes.

Questacon

Opened in 1988, Questacon has a reputation of being Australia's pioneering science and technology centre. With over 200 exhibits, there is plenty for children and adults alike, with a focus on interactivity. There is not a velvet rope in sight as you crash, bang and fly through the best advances in technology.

Australian National Botanic Gardens

Located at the foot of Black Mountain, enjoy 6800 species of flora over 40 hectares. Climatic zones have been created, allowing you to experience rainforest, desert and mountainous environments all at one site.

Parliament House

Like to know where decisions affecting the nation are made? Then make some time to visit Australia's Parliament House. Open from 9-5pm (on non-sitting days), free tours start every 30 minutes. Experience life in the seat of power!

Shopping

Canberra offers shopping experiences to tempt even the most fussy of buyers.

If high end shopping appeals, try the fashionable districts of Manuka and Kingston. Located within easy walking distance of each other, and approximately 10 minutes drive from Canberra's city centre, enjoy designer labels, gourmet food and rare antiques. This is the place to see and be seen.

A few minutes walk from the City Centre, you'll find Lonsdale Street, a source of all things Canberra. Lonsdale Street is truly a revelation for those who are looking for the unique and inspiring.

If markets are more your thing, then you won't want to miss the famous Old Bus Depot Markets. Each Sunday, vendors offer a dazzling array of products for sale - from wines to cheese to fruits and vegetables.

The Gorman House Markets, held every Saturday, are a veritable treasure trove of antiquities, second hand books and international food. Indulge in fantastic foods as you browse the stalls for that great find.
